On Monday September 21st, Fred Penner steps to the mic and says now the moment you have all been waiting for, the winner of the 2015 Polaris Music Prize is Buffy Sainte-Marie.

As she made her way to the stage to accept the award her first words were “I am really surprised” how did beat such amazing talent?

I bought and listened to everybody’s album and they’re all so good”

The Polaris Music Prize is awarded to the best full-length Canadian album based on artistic merit, disregarding record labels, music genre, and album sales. 11 men and women from the music industry who are bloggers, broadcasters, or music critics decided that “Power in the Blood” was the best Canadian album released last year.

Buffy Sainte-Marie also made the record books with this win as she becomes the oldest singer-songwriter to receive the prize. Also she is the second aboriginal artist to win the prize the first being Throat singer Tanya Tagaq who won last year.

Aboriginal music has been good for a very long time, but nobody has been listening to it till now,” Sainte Marie.

The Alvvays, BADBADNOTGOOD, GhostfaceKillah,The Braids, Jennifer Castle, Tobias Jesso Jr, Drake, The New Pornographers, Caribou and Viet Cong will all receive 3,000 thanks to the Slaight Music Initiative

James Keast had this to say in conclusion “ The tenth anniversary made it no less difficult for the Grand Jury to debate the amazing Short List albums and pick a winner.” “I’m very proud of the discussions and thoughtful consideration that went into choosing this year’s winner.”
