Tori Kelly delights and dazzles at CMW

Submitted by on April 2, 2013 – 4:23 pmNo Comment

Friday night of CMW, instead of going over to cover big names like Hedley or Marianas Trench, I decided to make my way over to the Virgin Mobile Mod Club and check out YouTube sensation, Tori Kelly from Canyon Lake, Calif.

With today’s music industry, if you want a shot at being discovered, YouTube is the key. The online video service has become the launch pad for many newly famous artists – such as Psy or Justin Bieber.

Expecting maybe a couple hundred people, I was surprise to be greeted by a full house. To say I was surprised by the turn out is an understatement.

As I waited for her show to start, I ran into Shawn Hook from South Slocan B.C., who opened for Kelly. As we chatted away, I hear this gentle voice speak the crowd erupts into a frenzy, and so begins her first song.

As she finishes her first song, I am thoroughly impressed by not only her stage presence, but also her ability to entrance the audience.

If anyone wanted an idea of how to put on a successful musical performance, they need only to attend a Tori Kelly show. It was like having a seat next to her while she’s in her home studio creating masterful works of auditory art.

She was once quoted saying “I just want to share my passion and express myself through music, which will hopefully inspire the world.”

One of the most amazing things about a Tori Kelly show is its simplicity.

It allows us to see and hear just how talented she really is.Kelly is not only an inspired singer-songwriter, she can also play multiple instruments, such as drums, piano, and guitar.

Kelly’s musical influences are as diverse as she is, crediting the likes of Michael Jackson, Jeff Buckley, Jill Scott, as well as gospel artists J. Moss and Crystal Lewis.

As of now, Kelly has amassed almost 400,000 YouTube subscribers and 36.5 million views.

Kelly has a chameleon-like ability to embody any artist she covers with a passion and purity, a talent that often gets lost in today’s music where a lot of it is overly complex and overproduced.

After years of hard work and talent show disappointments, this looks to be Tori Kelly’s year for success, with sold out shows in Canada and the U.S. for her Fill a Heart Tour.

With Kelly’s drive, determination, and talent, it won’t be long before she is playing to packed houses at large venues across the world, so keep an eye out for this up-and-comer.Story and photos by Tee Onek
