Lips undresses the ugliness of the music industry

“We’ve done, what, 14 albums and only three of them were signed to a Canadian label. We have to try a hell of a lot harder… Canadian musicians we gotta be 10 times better than anybody else, before we even make a dent.” The words roll off Steve “Lips” Kudlow’s tongue with a conviction bordering contention in a recent interview. As  frontman for the legendary Toronto metal outfit Anvil, Lips has once or thrice been crushed by the unforgiving cogs of the music machine. Over a 30-year span he and drummer Robb Reiner have seen the downs and – especially since the release of the smash 2008 documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil – ups of the music industry. In this Martyr TV interview, Lips delves into what he feels, in many ways, kept the band from reaching the heights of fame  it once seemed destined to find.
