Panam TO2015 Choose Kanye Over Drake / Canadian Artists To Headline Closing Ceremonies on Canadian Soil
This is a perfect example of what is wrong with Canada. Over the course the last millenia, we have turned out some of the best products and people in the entertainment industry. Yet we don’t highlight and support our own, when given the chance to. Case in point, Canada is hosting the largest athletic event ever held on Canadian soil and what do the powers that be do, they hire one of the most talented, egocentric musicians on the planet, who also is not Canadian. Our taxdollars once again being efficiently spent, because you know Kanye is not going to perform for FREE; like all the other artists on stage from the 10-26 of this month. You might be going huh, at this moment. Yes, all the amazing Canadian artists and musicians, who are performing on stages for you at Pan Am Park and Nathan Phillip Square are doing so for a pittance or are performing for free.
This is the sad reality that faces Canadian artists. We don’t support our own until they go off and become established names in Europe, Asia or the U.S. Then when they come back to Canada, they start getting shown a modicom of respect and admiration. When the Panam committee made this decision is was motivated by $, nothing else. And with the fact that Canadian athletes are having an impressive showing at the games combined with nightly concerts showcasing amazing Canadian talent, people are taking notice.
CBC has already been called out for their spotty and lacklustre event coverage and now PanAm To2015 is getting a taste of it as well with their choice to have the most arrogant, egotistical, narcissistic and controversial rapper on the planet, close the largest atheletic event ever held on Canadian soil. One person made the astute observation “Did Canada suddenly run out of Canadian talent?”
Another asked “Why exactly is Kanye West the closing “talent” for the @TO2015 games?” We don’t have a TO or even Cdn talent pool to pick from?
Here are some of the responses from the twitter regarding @TO2015 choice of closing talent:
For all the goodwill that Saad Rafi and the @TO2015 made with being able to have the games open almost flawlessly, while showcasing Canadian pride in our nation and athletes. Then be on or under budget regarding almost all aspects of the games. You just threw it all away by hiring the most controversial music artist on the planet, and to top it off he isn’t Canadian.
Here are just a few Canadian names of the top of my head that are musically inclined, can draw a crowd and put money in your pocket via ticket sales. Celine Dion, Drake, Nickelback, Bryan Adams, K-OS, Billy Talent, Michael Buble, Rush, The Who, Justin Bieber. These were just a few names that came to me while writing this piece, I’m sure if I did a search the list would become quite long. Each of the names that I mentioned can pull a crowd of 10-25,000 fans easily. So WTF were you thinking when you were planning this. Oh, I know someone on the committee wanted to meet Kanye and figured they would do it on our dime.
@TO2015 spent years planning to ensure the execution of an event of this magnitude would go off with as few hiccups as possible. So there is no excuses for them to hide behind, when it comes to them, wasting Canadian tax payers money on a closing event that doesn’t have a large Canadian musical contingent. Pitbull fits into the line-up due to his hispanic heritage. This last tweet sums up what alot a people are feeling about @TO2015
