Last Gang Records celebrates 10th year running
The Toronto based record label that rose to the top of the Canadian music market after discovering and developing the one and only – Metric – celebrates their tenth year in action, and like everything they do, they went all out.The party was held at the Guvernment on Toronto’s harbour front – a regular spot for ravers and lovers of the electronic persuasion, and on that front, this night was another one for the books.
The headliner was none other than the dynamic duo called MSTRKRFT – a self-explanatory name for this pair of Toronto veterans on the music scene that created this Canadian electronic music mania back in 2005, composed of Jesse F. Keeler of Death from Above 1979 and Al-P formerly of the GTA-based electro-pop shoppe Girlsareshort. The bros rocked the ones and twos for a massive crowd of hundreds and hundreds of people, jam-packed into this sweaty but swanky night of celebration and inebriation.
This night was not only to bask in the reflected glory that Last Gang has delivered over the last decade, and will continue to deliver over the next decade, with acts such as the aforementioned Metric, Death From Above 1979 and MSTRKRFT, their resume also includes staple names like Purity Ring, Ethan Kath of Crystal Castles, Huoratron, Electric Youth and many more who all showed up in support of their label on this night.Owner and founder of the label, Chris Taylor – a previously disgruntled entertainment lawyer from Toronto, wrote a comprehensive autobiographical short piece in the Huffington Post, and this statement stood out loudly as to what Last Gang is all about.
“We started this label at the dawn of the downturn in the music business, to prove the world wrong, to help a band we loved, to turn people on to cool music. Your support and dedication has helped us fly. Us Against the World.”
