NDP leader diagnosed with ‘new’ cancer

Submitted by on July 25, 2011 – 6:17 pmNo Comment

Opposition Leader Jack Layton announced at a surprise press conference this afternoon in downtown Toronto that he will be taking a temporary leave of absence from politics.

While Layton stated that his battle with prostate cancer, first announced to the public in February, 2010, is going well, he said that he has been diagnosed with a ‘new,’ unspecified, cancer that will require further treatment.

Accompanied at the conference at the Toronto Hilton by his wife, MP Olivia Chow, and NDP president Brian Topp, Layton said that he will be taking the advice of his doctors by stepping down and appointing an interim NDP leader.

“I’m going to fight this cancer now,” said Layton, “so that I can be back to fight for families when Parliament resumes,” in September.

Layton recommended Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel be named interim leader during his absence and closed by saying:

“If I’ve tried to bring anything to federal politics, it’s the idea that hope and optimism should be at their heart; we can look after each other better than we do today.”
